My artistic practice begins from the context I inhabit. As my creative scope spans across the theatre, visual arts, and entertainment industry, my creative ideas move fluidly between these identities. This process is initiated through the discovery of environmental phenomena and a perception of self-contradiction. For example, I dissect my entertaining drag-queen persona through theatrical performance; I transform the frustration of shifting identities into stand-up comedy text; and apply my criticism and bewilderment towards both mainstream and underground subcultures into two-dimensional drawings. Ultimately, I return to an acknowledgement of the identity of “labour” within artistic creation—transforming these experiences into readable performance and visual forms and responding to the possible manifestations of the contemporary queer community.
This time, I will use media developed from my previous work as the starting point; my drag queen character’s mold-making mask, birth cloth, audio tapes, visuals, and accessories. My earlier works focused on identity, substituted personas, Mandarin pop music, and intimate text; these elements will therefore serve as the foundation to be reassembled and further developed. This process centres on a self that is more attuned to the “present”, allowing the energy generated during the artistic process to liquefy and transform. At the same time, I have intentionally left a large area blank. During my time in Sydney, I hope to breathe, to absorb my experiences, and to let them become part of my personal archive, elements that I expect will connect with and expand upon what I have already prepared.
I am most excited about the opportunity to exchange ideas with other artists and to discover what kinds of feelings the city of Sydney may offer me. The chance to engage in artistic exchange is itself a creative process, and since I rarely have this opportunity, I anticipate it greatly. What excites me most should be the unknown. I am willing to keep a part of myself blank, allowing the produced feelings and inspiration to fill my body. I am also excited about how I might bring new creative ideas and emotions to others through this experience.
A: I believe that both the differences and the similarities between artists should be highlighted during international exchange. Within a single country or among similar fields of practice, similarities often outweigh differences. While these exchanges are well-intentioned and stimulating, international exchange may offer a broader perspective; it strengthens each artist’s viewpoint as shaped by their personal history. This kind of exchange can ignite new sparks, encouraging more diverse and compelling artistic production. Particularly in today’s era of social media and the internet, physical and communicative exchange, embedded within the creative process and the work itself, will allow creators to expand their thinking in meaningful ways. Such exchange is not limited to the artists alone. By carrying and reflecting each other’s perspectives, creators can convey a broader dimension to their audiences through their work. This, I believe, is the true meaning of international exchange.
